Joseph McFarland has been directing the district's curriculum and instruction since the spring of 2009.
He initially came to the Derry Township School District during the 2001-02 school year. He first served as Assistant Principal for the Elementary School and in the fall of 2002, McFarland became principal of the Primary Elementary School.
His education includes a B.S. in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Development from Millersville University.
McFarland also earned a master's equivalency and supervisory certification in curriculum and instruction at Millersville University. He holds a master’s degree in Teaching and Curriculum from Penn State University. He also obtained his K-12 principal’s certification from PSU and his Superintendent's Letter of Eligibility from Temple University.
McFarland began his teaching career at the Hempfield School District in Lancaster County where he taught elementary students for 14 years. He served as Head Teacher at Hempfield's Rohrerstown Elementary School during his last six years at the school. McFarland is married and has three daughters.
