The National School Lunch Program began over 64 years ago. Today, school meals offer students a wide variety of nutritious, great tasting food choices. The district’s breakfast and lunch programs serve over 2,700 meal equivalents a day. These healthy, convenient, and economical meals contain high-quality ingredients from the five food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, meat/poultry, and dairy products. Studies have shown that children who eat well-balanced meals are more attentive in class and more responsive to learning.

The district does not allow students to leave the building during the lunch period. Those students not wishing to take part in school meal programs may bring a lunch from home. They may still buy milk or other a la carte items in the school cafeteria. The district also offers the SNAP Debit System in all schools. Save time by purchasing meal credits in advance. Today’s busy lifestyle can find us searching for lunch money at the last minute.

Free and Reduced Price Meals
The district serves free or reduced price meals daily to students who qualify, based on income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Families experiencing unusual hardships such as high medical expenses, special education expenses of a child, or disaster or casualty losses are encouraged to apply for benefits.  This can be done using COMPASS.

COMPASS allows Pennsylvanian’s to apply for social service programs, such as Food Stamps (FS), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Energy Assistance, Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), etc., online.  Families can use COMPASS to apply for free or reduced price school meals only, or they can apply for other services at the same time (FS, TANF, etc.).

     •  Once you access COMPASS, select "Apply for Benefits."
     •  Then select the programs you wish to apply for.
     •  You will be directed through a series of questions regarding those programs.
     •  Please enter "Dauphin County" as the county of the school when you apply.
     •  Select the name of the school your student attends.

Once the questions have been completed, the COMPASS system will direct your information to each appropriate program office and the school you selected will receive the Household Meal Benefit Application.  The school will notify you if you are eligible for free or reduced price meals.

If you apply for free or reduced price school meals through COMPASS, you do not need to submit a paper application.  Or you may obtain a free or reduced meal application from the Food Services Office at any time during the school year.
