    Overview
    The Elementary library collection contains approximately 30,000 materials.
     
    Borrowing Procedures
    Students in grades 2-5 visit the library with their class once each six-day cycle for a lesson and book selection. Students in grades K-1 visit the library with their class at scheduled times with their class for book selection.  Students may borrow two books during their visit if they do not have any overdue books. Students with one overdue book may still borrow one book.
     
    Books are due the next class visit and may be returned or renewed. Overdue notices are distributed on a regular basis to remind students of books that must be returned. Students are not charged fines for overdue library books.                                           
     
    Library motto Lost & Damaged Books
    We ask that students please notify the library if they notice loose or torn pages in a book. This is normal wear and tear, and if repaired promptly, the book may continue to be circulated in the library.  It is important that books are kept in a safe place at home away from young children and pets. To avoid water damage, we suggest that students keep their library books away from water bottles.  If carried in a backpack, it is advisable to keep library books in a plastic bag to protect them from water damage. 
     
    Please be advised that students are responsible for paying the replacement cost of any book that is lost or damaged beyond repair. A "bill" is sent home with the student, and a receipt is provided when payment is received.  Payment may be made by cash or check. Checks should be made out to the Derry Township School District.

  • Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award Program

    Hershey Elementary School students are encouraged to participate in the Pennsylvania Young Reader’s Choice Award Program (PYRCA) sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Librarians Association.


    The purpose of this program is to promote the reading of quality books by the young people in the state; to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children’s literature; and to honor an author whose work has been recognized by the children of Pennsylvania. Students read books from the appropriate Grades K-3 or Grades 3-6  lists developed by the PYRCA committee.

    To qualify to vote for their favorite book, students must read or listen to at least three titles from their list. Students cast their votes in March, and the winners are announced at the Pennsylvania School Librarians Conference in the spring.

    Past Winners
