Hershey Middle School Cross Country

  • Cross-Country 2022

Thanks for showing interest in joining the cross-country team next fall, 2022.  I am excited to begin my 43rd year as head coach.  There is a lot of information that must be put into action this summer.  Before anyone can be a part of the team, you must get a physical exam after June 1.  The exam form can be found at the Derry Township School District website by clicking onto Athletics, scrolling to the bottom of the page to Athletic Forms, and clicking onto Physical Form.  At the same spot is Family ID.  This must also be completed.  You can get your physical exam from your family doctor, or you can schedule an appointment with the school doctor by calling the athletic office.  Physical exams at the school are on June 7th starting at 3:00pm or August 1st starting at 3:00pm.

The middle school cross-country website is found under Athletics, near the bottom of the page under Fall Sports, Cross Country, Junior High.  The website will be updated in early June.  On the website, there will be a place to sign up under google docs.  You can also let me know of your interest by emailing me at my school address rdailey@hershey.k12.pa.us or at my home address at rldailey3690@gmail.com.  I’ll be glad to answer any questions about the team.  Questions about the Physical Form or Family ID should be sent to the middle school trainer, Jordan Bartal, at jbartal@hershey.k12.pa.us.

We will have voluntary practices on Monday evenings on July 11, 18, 25, and August 1 and 8 from 7:00 until 8:00 starting at the high school track.  Forms do not have to be completed to participate in these optional practices.  Regular practices will begin the first day of school, August 22, right after school.  We will practice every day 15 minutes after school is dismissed for 75 minutes.  I will give specific times when we get closer to the start of school.  All forms should be sent to the school digitally by August 15 so the trainer has time to review them.  Nobody may start practice on August 22 unless the trainer has reviewed the forms and has given me a list of who is eligible.

I do not have a schedule of meets yet, but I would guess that we start on Wednesday, September 7.  Meets are on Wednesdays through September until the middle of October.  In preparing your fall schedule, please keep Wednesdays open.  Our home course is at Founders Park.  Races start at 4:00.  All courses are about 2 miles.  There is a girls’ race and a boys’ race.  To be successful in the fall,  it is extremely important for athletes to run in the summer.  Start at a distance and pace that feels comfortable to you and keep increasing until you can run 2 miles without stopping.  Each day at practice, we will run a series of short distances and a main run of 1-2 miles.  Please train during the summer (best if done in the cooler mornings or evenings) to be able to stay with the team during our runs.

Assistant Coach Shoemaker will be replacing Assistant Coach Edwards from last year.

Again, thank you for showing interest in being part of the team.  Encourage friends to also join us.  Parents, please do not procrastinate in getting a physical exam scheduled after June 1 and completing the Family ID.  Students, you must run over the summer to be prepared for the season.  I hope to meet some of you at the optional practices this summer and meet the whole team after school on Monday, August 22.  Email me if you have questions.  The team website will be updated as soon as possible, so check it out this summer for additional information.

    Have a great summer!

    Meet Assistant Coach Leanne Shoemaker

Coach Shoemaker started as an assistant track and field coach this spring and is excited to join cross country!  She currently works at Hershey Middle and High School.  She played volleyball in high school and college, and now runs for a hobby.  So far, Coach Shoemaker has completed 10 marathons and looks forward to learning something new this season.

Volunteer Coach Mandy Hollinger will be with the team again this season.
