SAT Prep Workshop at HHS
We are once again pleased to offer our SAT Preparatory Instructional Course this fall and winter. These courses are designed to prepare our students for the SAT, as well as the PSAT, due to their similar format. All students will be taught the strategies and skills required to raise their scores significantly. The course will meet once a week for 5 consecutive weeks and will cost $100. When you register, you will choose a day of the week to attend. Please note that some evenings the course will be via Zoom, and other nights the course will be in-person; that is determined by the evening you select. Students will receive an hour of verbal instruction, an hour of mathematics instruction, and an hour utilizing an online program which pinpoints weaknesses and allows students to receive extra practice on those targeted areas. (Specific dates for the SAT exam and our workshops are listed on the registration form, which can be found below.).
Zoom Classes (Tuesdays in the Fall and Wednesdays in the Winter)
All classes will occur on Zoom from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Students should stop in Room G246 or Room G148 prior to the first class to pick up needed materials.
In-Person Classes (Wednesdays and Thursdays in the Fall and Tuesdays in the Winter)
All classes will occur in-person at Hershey High School from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Students will enter through the Gymnasium/Auditorium doors and proceed to the LGI. Materials will be distributed at the first class. In-person classes may become Zoom classes if needed due to inclement weather or school closures.
As part of this course, students will complete four practice tests. To maximize scoring potential, it is imperative that students use the time outside of class to take the practice tests given during the course. Each evening during the math and verbal sessions, students will be given the opportunity to ask questions about the SAT Practice Test that they took that week. During the computer session, they will have the opportunity to enter their answers into a program which will score their tests. The students can then receive lessons and additional practice questions on math and verbal skills based upon their weaknesses. It should be noted that we utilize two different sets of practice tests. One set is administered during the fall session and another set is utilized during the winter session.
In addition to juniors and seniors, we are pleased to offer interested sophomores an opportunity to begin their SAT preparation by enrolling in the Fall 2022 or Winter 2023 SAT prep programs. Admittedly, we are not recommending that all sophomores undertake this opportunity; however, preparation during the sophomore year provides students with a full calendar year to improve their scores for the critical tests they will encounter during their junior year. Research indicates that those students who take advantage of SAT test preparation during their sophomore year have the potential to score higher than those students who wait until their junior year. While we typically do not advocate that sophomores register and take the SAT this year, students will be able to begin to acquire the strategies in critical reading, critical writing, and math -- as well as time management strategies -- to best enhance their scoring potential. Depending on individual readiness, most juniors will register to take the SAT in the fall, winter and/or spring.
We will also be once again offering a Mock SAT test for an additional $20. Students will be required to arrive at Hershey High School no later than 8:00 a.m. They will be given that week’s practice test at this time. During the Mock Test, we will be following SAT time restraints as well as break limitations. It is very helpful for students to experience a four-hour test before they actually take the SAT. If students choose not to attend the Mock SAT, they will need to complete the test for that week on their own.
Class enrollment is limited. Please complete the registration form on the back of this paper as soon as possible. Completed registration forms and the payment can be dropped off at the high school office or mailed to Lori Ogle at Hershey High School, PO Box 898, Hershey, PA 17033. Checks should be made payable to Derry Township School District.
We are confident that this course will greatly benefit students’ scores. Please feel free to contact me at LOgle@hershey.k12.pa.us with any questions or concerns.
