Current Juniors: If you are interested in applying for the HCEP (Healthcare Career Exploration Program) Internship at the Hospital for next school year, the medical center portion of the application process is OPEN!! The deadline to complete their application portion is February 24th. The hospital’s application link is https://redcap.link/2023HCEPapp You will be required to get an unofficial transcript, current report card and respond to some questions to upload for it.
You must also attend our high school internship programs meeting for next year to complete the process to apply for HCEP on
January 30th during each of the lunch periods.

Healthcare Career Exploration Program (HCEP)
Application Overview
HCEP is a program offered as a collaboration among Penn State College of Medicine, Penn State Health, and local high schools.
The application for HCEP is available online (https://redcap.link/2023HCEPapp). You will need to prepare the following documents before starting the application. The application must be completed in one sitting – please do not start the online application until you have the following documents ready to upload:
□ Unofficial transcript (Scan it or take a clear picture to upload. Photo MUST be .jpg or .png format.)
□ Current report card (Scan it, or take a clear picture to upload. Photo MUST be .jpg or .png format)
□ A word document with a one-paragraph response for each of the following questions: 1. What do you hope to gain from participating in this shadowing experience?
2. What qualities, skills and work/leadership experiences do you have that make you an excellent candidate for this program?
3. Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your application?
When saving the files to upload, the file name should include your first initial, last name, HCEP, 2023, and type of file – ex. S.Nieves_HCEP_transcript_2023.jpg; S.Nieves_HCEP_reportcard_2023.png; S.Nieves_HCEP_essays_2023.docx

Important Information:
- • Application link: https://redcap.link/2023HCEPapp
- • The application window closes February 24, 2023.
- • The applications will be reviewed by a committee, and students will be selected to interview based on the committee’s feedback. Interviews will be held the week of March 6-10, 2023 via zoom, and times will be arranged through your school’s co-op coordinator. You will be notified by the HCEP program director of the date and time. Interview and acceptance decisions are made carefully and considered final.
- • If selected to participate: o TRANSPORTATION TO/FROM the Penn State Hershey Medical Center is generally the responsibility of the student and family. There will be transportation assistance available on a limited, as-needed basis. Please be sure to discuss transportation options with your family AND with the school co-op coordinator. You may also call the Penn State College of Medicine's Diversity Office to discuss options for assistance (717-531-7671).
- o Background clearances will be required. You will be given instructions on how to obtain them, and they will be due at the end of the summer at the Parent Meeting. There is a fee for the FBI fingerprinting.
- o We will ask for a copy of your immunization record, including COVID vaccine information, and you will need to obtain your flu vaccine when available at your doctor’s office or local pharmacy. There are limited exceptions available for those who are unable to receive the COVID vaccine – please let your school co-op coordinator know if you need to explore the exceptions.
- o Each participating student will purchase a blue HCEP coat to wear while shadowing. If the expense is a hardship, please let your school co-op coordinator know.
The Healthcare Career Exploration Program (HCEP) allows high school students the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals in a real-work environment and to explore various healthcare professions.
This program will introduce selected senior students to a variety of areas at the Penn State Health Milton S Hershey Medical Center. The HCEP program allows high school seniors the opportunity to interact with healthcare professionals in a real-world environment and to explore various healthcare professions. Students who have demonstrated an interest in medical, science and related careers are targeted for this senior program.
Students must apply and be accepted into this program by the Penn State Health Milton S Hershey Medical Center. Students must also complete all Hershey High School internship application paperwork.
The program runs 8:30 AM to 10 AM Monday-Friday. Seminars will be held on the Fridays at the hospital during the same time frame.
The program will be one semester - Fall Semester.
Near the end of the semester, students will present a senior project at the Penn State Health Milton S Hershey Medical Center.
