Bike to School Day – May 6

Bike to School Day – May 6

Get ready for Bike to School Day on May 6! The Township of Derry, Derry Township Police Department, and Derry Township School District are teaming up to celebrate National Bike to School Day and encourage families to get active on the way to school. Take advantage of the fresh spring weather to get your body moving and your mind ready for the day.

Families are invited to gather at the Memorial Field parking lot (Cocoa & Elm) from 8:15–8:40 AM to cheer on elementary students as they walk and bike to school, joined by Coco, the Hershey Bears mascot and other community partners!

This year, a group of community volunteers have organized three Elementary bike bus routes. A bike bus is an organized group of students and families who ride together along a set route to school. Routes will depart from the Hershey Italian Lodge at 8:05 AM, the Masonic Lodge at 8:05 AM, and from Spring Creek Church of the Brethren at 8:05 AM, with all routes running in reverse after school at 3:40 PM. Adults are needed to help support the routes and keep students safe. Please consider joining your child(ren) and wearing high-visibility yellow. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Brian Link at brianglink1@gmail.com

The first 200 students to arrive will receive a flashing safety light donated by Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. InGear Cycling & Fitness, Pedal Pusher Bike Shop, and Recycle Bicycle will offer bike safety checks. Penn State Health Pediatric Injury Prevention staff will offer bike helmet fittings and the DTSD Food Services Department will provide healthy snacks. Students from grades K-12 can also register their Bike to School Day Pledge for a chance to win prizes at https://forms.gle/9SFrgUoA5qAY1uZF9

Families who live too far to bike the entire way are encouraged to park nearby and ride part of the route or join a community bike bus.

All students are expected to be at school on time for 8:40 AM.

Bike to School Day raises awareness for safe routes to school while promoting physical activity, safety, and community connection. We look forward to encouraging a healthy lifestyle and community spirit!
