    POL HERSHEY POETRY OUT LOUD/SHAKESPEARE COMPETITION AND TEA

    It's time now to mark your calendars, select your poems and Shakespeare sonnets for this year's POL/Shakespeare Competition! If you're not in the mood to recite, you could always volunteer to assist with the event as it is open to the public and includes that infamous tea!  To select poems for the event, selections can be found at the National Poetry Out Loud website at the following LINK.  Shakespeare selections may be found at this LINK - which includes sonnets and monologue selections. 
     
    pdu STEM SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

    Penn State Harrisburg's School of Science, Engineering, and Technology will hold their annual two week STEM Summer Enrichment Workshop (STEM-SEP) in June 2020. Applications are being accepted through February 21, 2020 5:00 p.m. The workshop is designed to improve students' knowledge through hands-on activities in a variety of STEM areas, including: mathematics, computer science, chemistry, biology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and physics. High school students currently in the 10th and 11th grades are invited to apply.

     
    PENNSYLVANIA FREE ENTERPRISE WEEKPA

    Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW) is a one-of-a-kind summer program that offers in-coming high school juniors and seniors a unique and challenging opportunity to see what it is like to run their own business. Participants will make up an "imaginary" management team where they will learn first-hand about the Free Enterprise System. Their task - turn their failing company into a financial success! They will develop their own marketing strategies, design a website and in essence, make all of the decisions that are demanded of real life company executives.

    BUSINESS PLANS DUE: APRIL 1, 2020
    The Chamber High School Business Challenge (CHSBC) invites teams of high school students to explore innovation and entrepreneurship by developing and pitching business plans that would best serve the region and its residents. As an initiative out of the Chamber & CREDC’s Education & Business Partnership Committee, students are challenged to explore business ideas that can succeed both creatively and financially in South Central Pennsylvania. The final competition is a ‘Shark Tank’ style competition where students present their business ideas to a panel of judges. The winning students are awarded scholarship dollars solicited from sponsors of the competition. 
     
    PERRY THE PERRY INNITATIVE

    The Perry Initiative Program is now seeking applicants for our Philadelphia, PA program. Participants should be women in grades 10 and up with an expressed interest in science, medicine and/or engineering.  We would very much appreciate if you could pass this information along to any high school principals, high school science teachers or high school students you may know.  Applicants should be directed to fill out our online application in advance of the January 22, 2020 application deadline.     Shippensburg University's chapter of Sigma Tau Delta is sponsoring AuthorSHIP Writing Contest, a Central Pennsylvania competition that encourages young writers in multiple writing styles. The three categories include poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. A first and second place winner is selected from each category in both the high school and middle school division, resulting in a total of twelve awards and cash prizes.  To submit please visit the following LINK  
     
    MILLERSVILLE ENTREPRENEUR SUMMER CAMP BUSINESS

    Learn how to develop, refine, and test your ideas, how to create a business plan, how to market and finance your enterprise, and ultimately, how to persuade others that your idea is worth pursuing. Make a live pitch in front of judges in a ‘Shark Tank’ format (only friendlier!). Through an experiential and fun approach, learn the business skills needed to move your idea from concept to reality.

    The Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Sciences (PGSS) was established in order to provide a summer enrichment experience in the sciences and mathematics for talented Pennsylvania high school students and to encourage them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The program provides instruction in biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science, with emphasis on collaborative learning and team research.  Cost: FREE

    PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNORS SCHOOL FOR AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE

    The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Agricultural Sciences at Penn State first hosted this enrichment program in 1986. Over the years, this special program has impacted over 1600 participants in exploring college life and the expansive and diverse fields of agricultural science and natural resources. This is a four-week residential program held primarily at University Park campus for academically talented and gifted high school rising seniors from throughout Pennsylvania.  Cost: FREE

    The PennsylvaniThe dynamic world of health care plus the expertise of University of Pittsburgh academics and facilities. This educational mixture shapes a unique, academically rigorous, hands-on campus experience for students attending the Health Career Scholars Academy (UPHCSA) each summer. The Academy is often a springboard for future studies in medicine. There is a fee for this program, but scholarships are available.

    The Iacocca Global Entrepreneurship Intensive brings American high school sophomores and juniors (ages 16-17) together with international high school students from all regions of the world for four weeks to live and learn together at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.     Congratulations to Jordon Lewis for be selected to recite and sing at this year's Pennsylvania Department of Education All Staff Meeting.  She was also selected to again appear at the August Wilson Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the Governor's Awards for the Arts.

    A shout out to our wonderful student board representatives who attended and manned Derry Township's booth this year at the Pennsylvania School Board Association Leadership Conference.  Henry Carrera, Maya Fitterer and Lindsey Aluquin not only only answered questions about various programs offered here in Derry Township, but they also got a chance to explore educational ideas from around the Commonwealth.  Mr. McFarland even dropped  by!                               They did Hershey proud!!

    Congratulations to Samantha Koegler and Allie Weller for taking 2nd Place overall in Millersville University's Science Knowledge Competition.   The examination, assembled by various math and science department faculty, is a set of random questions in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, enviornmental science & sustainability, mathematics, nursing, physics, technology and the health professions. 

    Out of 23 competing school districts, Allie and Samantha did Hershey proud!

    Congratulations to David Mailman, Jonathan Haidet, Jason Zaprazny, Avi Lukacher, and David Green (Alternate) for winning their first round of this year's Brain Buster Competition.  But there is a long way to go!  Good Luck!

    Congratulations to David Mailman, Avi Lukacher, Amy Wu, Kole Kramer and Michael Loughnane for being named among the national semifinalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program.  Around 16,000 students are named semifinalists out of a pool of over 1.6 million students. Students qualify as semifinalists based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)

    Congratulations to The Hershey HS FBLA Regional Delegation.  The team took home six first placements and a number of state qualifying awards.

     AIRPLANES AND THE SCIENCE OF FLIGHT

    We were pleased to have Louis Thieblemont, noted lecturer, flight trainer, and retired pilot, as guest speaker at Hershey High School. After graduating from New York Institute of Technology, he worked for Air France as a Flight Dispatch officer at the JFK airport where he also managed computerized flight plans. He eventually became a commercial pilot for 37 years, first for TWO and then American Airlines.  At the present time, Mr. Thieblemont lectures around the world on scientific topics ranging from astronomy, aviation, Antarctic exploration, computer graphics and flight simullation.
