Standard Response Protocol

Why SRP?

Derry Township School District has joined more than 50,000 schools, districts, departments, municipalities and organizations with the adoption of Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for emergency response and communication.

Our Mission

Created by the "I love you guys" Foundation, SRP provides clear, consistent, shared language among students, staff, first responders, and parents during emergency situations. SRP allows for quick coordinated action and builds muscle memory to respond appropriately during crisis situations.

Advantages of SRP

  • Continuity of expectations and actions for the students throughout their education career.
  • Enables rapid response determination when unexpected events occur.
  • Common vocabulary and protocols for first responders.

 SRP is Action Based

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on the response to any given situation not on individual scenarios. Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP demands a specific vocabulary but also allows for great flexibility. The premise is simple - these five specific actions that can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a "Term of Art" and is then followed by a "Directive." Execution of the action is performed by active participants.

Icons for SRP - Hold, secure, lockdown, evacuate, shetler

Hold is followed by the Directive: "In Your Room or Area" and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants. Student will continue business as usual. Staff will lock doors and account for students and adults.

Secure is followed by the Directive: "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building. Student will return to inside the building and continue with business as usual. Adults will ensure everyone is indoors and account for all students and adults.

Lockdown is followed by "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place.

Evacuate may be followed by a location, and is used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building.

Shelter and state the Hazard and Safety Strategy for group and self protection. This may be used for tornados, hazmat  or earthquakes. Students and Adults may need to evacuate, seal the room, get to high ground, etc. Students and adults are trained in appropriate hazards and safety strategies.
