School Bus Driver Requirements
In order to become a licensed school bus driver in the state of Pennsylvania, one must complete the following steps:
- Schedule a School Bus Driver Physical (Form DL-704)
- Complete the School Bus Driver Training Course consisting of:
- Fourteen (14) hours of classroom training
- Minimum of six (6) hours of driving time with a certified instructor.
- Completion of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation CDL Knowledge Tests, including:
- “B” Class Commercial Driver's License – General Knowledge Test
- Air Brakes Knowledge Test
- Passenger Endorsement Knowledge Test
- School Bus Endorsement Knowledge Test
- Completion of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Driving Test which include the following items:
- Vehicle Pre-Trip Inspection Test
- Basic Skills Test
- On-Road Driving Test
In order to maintain one's credentials to operate a school bus in the state of Pennsylvania, one must complete the following steps:
- Maintain your annual School Bus Driver Physical (Form DL-704)
- Complete Recertification training every four years, including:
- Completion of Penn DOT School Bus Endorsement Test
- Seven (7) hours of classroom training time
- Three (3) hours of driving time with certified trainer
- Proper documentation of all training hours must be submitted to Penn DOT for review
