Be Advised: PA has NOT Extended Local Tax Deadline
While the Internal Revenue Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue recently announced that income tax filing deadlines for 2020 returns are extended to May 17, 2021, unfortunately no such change has been made for the Local Earned Income Tax filing deadline. We bring this to your attention as neither school districts nor local municipalities have legal authority to change the April 15 deadline set by state statute. Only action by the Governor’s Office, the PA General Assembly and /or the PA Department of Community and Economic Development can change the deadline. Absent any extension, 2020 local earned income taxes filed after April 15, 2021 must be considered late and are subject to penalty. UPDATE: an amended PA House Bill 766 has been passed by the state house and is awaiting consideration by the state senate. The bill would extend the local tax filing deadline to be in concert with the revised federal and state tax deadlines.
